This painting is based on Franz Schubert's lieder, Der Tod und das Mädchen or Death and the Maiden. The text of which is derived from a poem written by Matthias Claudius - translated below:
The Maiden:
Pass me by! Oh, pass me by!
Go, fierce man of bones!
I am still young! Go, dear,
And do not touch me.
And do not touch me.
Death:
Give me your hand, you beautiful and tender form!
I am a friend, and come not to punish.
Be of good cheer! I am not fierce,
Softly shall you sleep in my arms!
I love the energy of the music, the fear of death and the longing to taste more of life, which transforms into a peaceful dirge as Death offers comfort and rest.
This narrative reminded me of two other common representations in traditional art: Eve in the Garden (often a young nude woman with fruit), and the Penitent Magdalene (pictured with long hair, a skull, and a candle). To me, these themes resonate with each other and are all present in this piece.
I think about the fleeting nature of innocence and beauty, the life we've lived and that we plan for, and the ultimate, peaceful end.
